ECE Undergraduate Awards/Scholarships

2023-2024 Procedure to Submit Supplementary Information

Each year the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UBC is able to allocate numerous awards/scholarships due to the support of our generous donors. These funds are typically split into awards ranging in value from $300 to $8,500. These awards, descriptions of which are available here, will be allocated competitively to ECE undergraduate students meeting or exceeding the criteria noted in the UBC Calendar in addition to the selection criteria noted below. We also expect to have some additional awards beyond those listed above once approved by APSC (e.g., the International Award for international students). If you do not currently meet the UBC required minimum GPA for receiving an award we hope knowledge of these scholarships will motivate you to approach your academic efforts differently.

Selection Criteria: Awards will be made based upon one or more of the following selection criteria and/or any restrictions noted in the award descriptions. All awardees must meet the criteria outlined in the UBC Calendar.

  1. Evidence of leadership within UBC APSC with greater weight given to activities more directly related to the ECE department (e.g., serving as an undergraduate TA, leadership roles in UBC student societies).
  2. Engagement with research activities either during the academic year or during the summer (this should be substantiated by a support letter from a faculty member).
  3. Maintaining a strong academic record while participating in demanding extracurricular activities (e.g., a Varsity sports team).
  4. Reference letters from faculty members and/or co-op supervisors attesting to strong interest and achievement in one or more subjects taught within the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
  5. Academic performance (e.g., grades either overall or in specific courses).

Restrictions: Please do not submit an application if you do not meet all of the following criteria (see "Regulations Governing University Awards" in the UBC Calendar and "Student Eligibility Check" under "Recommended Awards" on the Enrolment Services website for more details):

  1. You must be a Canadian citizen or Permanent resident to apply (unless you are an international student applying only for the International Award).
  2. You must have no failed grades and no deferred or missing grades from the 2022 Winter Session.
  3. If you are not in COOP you must have been enrolled in at least 27 credits in the 2022 Winter Session and you must be enrolled in at least 24 credits in the 2023 Winter session (unless it is your final year and you do not need 24 credits to graduate). Full time COOP students in 23W will have 100% of their award deferred to the following academic year (24W). Part time COOP students can receive 100% of their award if they are registered in 12 or more credits in the current academic session (23W), i.e., CO-OP in Term 1, 12 credits in Term 2.

The deadline for submitting applications is 11:59 PM Thursday, 15 February, 2024. Since reference letters cannot be uploaded until you first submit your application you are encouraged to submit your application early. The deadline for receiving reference letters is 6:00 PM Sunday, 18 February, 2024. At least one reference is required.

You must submit your application using the following CWL link. You will be asked for your resume in PDF format, a one page summary of how you meet the above criteria in PDF format and the name and email address of at least one and up to two people who are able to objectively comment upon your track record (e.g., a UBC ECE professor, research supervisor, co-op supervisor, student society leader, coach, or similar). To help the award selection committee better evaluate your application in the online form you can optionally select up to three awards among those currently announced that you believe match your achievements. However, all applicants will be considered for all awards for which they are eligible.
